Very quick, practical application. Not much on theology behind practicals.

I Don't think that this book is applicable under it's current title. Maybe I have been hedged in my spiritual growth, but in this book I see Basic principals that any disciple should be following in the first place.... Of course in saying that I am probably " preaching to the choir" .
I however did love "Equipping the Church Choir for Ministry: A Resource for Church Music Leaders and Choir Members" which goes into much more theology , and worship history. Another that I might suggest instead would be Tozers " Whatever happened to worship". It is not antiquated , though in an older style English, it is a focus on worship as a whole and not just in song ministry.

Excellently Written and Spiritually Sound

This book was very well constructed and I was amazed that the writers continued to revert to Scriptures to explain the validity of the points being made. Many 'spiritual' books tell a reader what the writer thinks, however this book stuck with the age old saying, "What does Scripture say?" It is spiritually sound; reminding readers consistantly the importance of true worship and what true worship is. I was wowed by this book and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it! Great job!

Literary Read - from Egypt to Ireland

This is a lovely literate read about a struggling academic in a foreign country (Ireland). I have, since my English Lit major days, been especially fond of the experience of other, often immigrant, in a new world. A book in the vernacular is fine, but a book by a lover of words & ideas is such a tasty morsel. Temple Bar is a tasty morsel.

I've long espoused the importance of including a broad cross section of literature about/by immigrants (or long visitors), at a minimum as required junior high/high school curriculum. One gets new eyes. Bigger eyes. Deeper eyes. It's like travel that involves some intimate connection to the unfamiliar country and it's people. In this direct, first person narrative, I often felt I was reading a diary - and I did feel the loss, confusion, alienation of the visitor to Ireland. And while the reader gets a broader understanding of how this "foreigner" experience feels, and perhaps is changed by it, so too is the main character changed and different when he returns to Egypt.

Nice Overview of Bourdieu

While not always terribly kind to Pierre Bourdieu (okay, the truth is that this book erupts into scathing critique at some points!), this is a very readable overview of Bourdieu's main ideas and books. Jenkins sees tremendous value in the questions Bourdieu poses and in how he always theorizes from a point of view informed by field research, and in still trying to get a grasp of this French theorist's work, I found this book equally valuable to my own purposes.

Engaging story, but the editing...

I loved the story and the chemistry between Gray and Suzy. There was completely more to the characters than what they each originally saw. The secondary relationship between Nick and Beth was also fun to watch. It'll be interesting to see how Beth explains that to Suzy in the next book. There was also a hint at the characters for book 4 with the introduction of Declan and Ella.

Unfortunately, the book was riddled with errors...typos, wrong words, extra words, missing words...mostly things a spell check would not have caught. It always makes for a difficult read when you have to mentally stop and figure out what word(s) should have been next in the sentence. It needs another go around with the proofreader.

I'm looking forward to the next installments, but will be leery of the editing.

I loved this book after reading the first of the series I had to get "Not Planning on you". Suzy is so funny, spontaneous, affectionate and original ....I laughed so much while reading this book it was hard to put in down until the end. I am looking forward to the other book from this series! I LOVED IT .....! I give it 5 Stars!
This was a great series to read after detoxing from "Fifty Shades" such an easy,entertaining, satisfying read!

Well written but just plain dribble..no real plot.....I actually bought the second book expecting something to happen to the person because it was listed in non fiction, but after the second book and it was still just sex and blow by blow of their regular day to day life I felt like i just wasted my time and money.

An excellent guide

This is a fine history and guide to a legendary--and controversial--fortification system. Designed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, then built during the Depression (thus providing work, though at a massive overall cost), the largely underground border forts (ouvrage) faced both Germany and Italy. Behind their seeming impregnability the French military dozed, sadly convinced they merely had to occupy the gros (large) and petite (small) ouvrage to hold off any fascist invasion. Indeed, we speak of the "Maginot mentality" to this day to denote something providing false security.

All of this is discussed and assessed here, but the real appeal of this book is just how much detailed information is provided. I especially like the 3-D diagrams of the various Maginot ouvrage, as they offer a solid sense of each underground fort layout and its relationship to local terrain. I began with those ouvrage that I've seen in the south of France---and they bring back that visit of 15 years ago with their clarity. Furthermore, they make clear just how much variance there was in this massive construction project--all of it designed and built with nary a computer in sight.

The literature on Maginot's line is substantial---but much of it is quite understandably written in French. Works by Mary and Truttman, to name two of the best French authorities, are invaluable and offer excellent illustrations. But if you can't read the French captions and text, naturally much is lost. The Kaufmann's book provides a concise history as well as the all the context that anyone could need to visit the sites today (more of them are opening all the time). At the same time, it provides something of an English "key" to all those French volumes. I know that I will use both together from now on.

I strongly recommend this well-conceived and illustrated book. For the price, you will not find a better guide to and history of a fascinating fortification.

Excellent Introduction and Guide

This is an excellent introduction and guide to the Maginot Line. It concisely covers the purpose and history of the Maginot Line. It explains the technology and armament of the line. It is very well illustrated with maps, photos and drawings. There is an excellent section on what parts of the Maginot Line are open to the public today, and it includes contact and other information for the various sites.

The book is an excellant modern study to the complete Maginot Line. Besides the main fortifications between France and Germany, it covers the minor fortifications between France and Beligum that were ultimately exploited by the Nazis and the fortifications between France and Italy, that were successful in stopping the Italion thrust into southern France. Also included are modern addresses and contacts for the fortifications that are open to the public.

Peter Sanderson is a comics historian and critic, who was Marvel's first official archivist. MISLEADING REVIEWS

i think some of these reviews shouldnt be on this page. these reviews apply to the first edition that had serious flaws. this is the updated and expanded version that was released oct 2009. these reviews are from the book that was released in 2006. they actually have the same reviews listed under the older version that was flawed.

when i brought this book, there were no reviews for it yet. i purchased this book the second day it was released in oct 2009.
i think amazon does this book a disservice by applying the same reviews to this book. it misleads people into thinking it has major flaws.

if you look at the titles it clearly says "updated and expanded version". maybe amazon used the review to imply it is a hot commodity(and it is), but by having the same outdated reviews for a book that was revised in 2009 seems a little self defeating and manipulative at the same time. being as though the reviews by some of the people are complaints about the older version.

even with the flaws, if you read the reviews below, you will see that many people also enjoyed the book. the only complaints came from hardcore geeky fans(no disrespect). most were somewhat minor, like the info for a few characters being off. but the artwork and lay-out is beautiful. and these complaints are fixed in this version, and thats why the complaints dont apply.

i think everyone will enjoy this book. as an artist who enjoys creating my own comic book characters and superheroes, the action poses are a tremendous reference for my characters. that was the main reason i bought this massive book. page after page of action poses and fight scenes. im not a hardcore collector at all! i enjoy comics but i dont live and die by them.

i used to flip through comics to get reference poses and inspiration and this book gives me more references and inspiration and insight than any book i ever came across.

if you want a good book thats informative i would suggest this book. by the way, i am turning into that geeky guy now. reading this encyclopedia has given me info on characters i never knew existed and exposed me to a world of supereroes that goes back 5 decades or more. i didnt realize some of my favorite and most familiar characters from childhood were around for so long.

i guess i had no concept of time when it came to the characters from marvel.
all in all, you cant be dissapointed in this book. even someone whos not a fan will enjoy the material in this book. hope this review helped

A Marvel fan's dream

Since then, Amazon has combined the reviews, and this is a shame, because the updated version corrects most if not all of the problems found in the previous version. /END NOTE

I received this book on it's release day, as I was very excited about it, and wanted it as quickly as possible. I was not disappointed! The book is 400 pages on high quality, glossy print, with brilliant artwork, and color that pops off the page.

The book is meant as a reference, and includes basically every Marvel character ever created with a short bio for some, and up to 4 pages for the Marvel superstars like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Wolverine.

I have the DC Encyclopedia as well, and it's great too, but the text is so small. The Marvel 2009 (Updated & Expanded) Encyclopedia improves this greatly with a font that's at least 2 sizes bigger for all entries, and many lead-in paragraphs include even larger fonts. This was a huge relief to my older eyes.

The encyclopedia includes more than just A to Z entries for heroes and villains, it also has entries for Marvel events, such as the Civil War. Non-American Marvel characters are included as well, including UK hero Captain Britain, and Alpha Flight, a Canadian team.

Extremely thorough, giant glossy pages, incredible artwork, and excellent layout (with a highly readable font) make this a masterwork, and a must-have for any Marvel fan. Amazon's price makes it a no-brainer.

The only drawback? Get your arms ready, this thing weighs 5.5 pounds!

Gets your thinking organized.

I am a typical chess player and have read many other chess books. This book deals very specifically with the thinking process, step by step. Other books do something similar, but this one is very specific. The coach/author discusses exactly what you should look at first, then second, etc. looking at several games. Many chess books try to make it sound like chess can be made easy: Win with e4!, How to win chess games, etc. The truth is chess is hard. The better you get, the tougher the competion. There is only one way to proceed: disciplined organization. That's what this book is about. In addition, there are some concepts, such as space, which are explained from a unique and useful point of view. Space for example is usually considered the area between your advanced pawns and your back rank. The author considers space the squares you control, a much more useful perspective and one which has potent effects on your analysis of possible moves. There are many other such helpful ways of looking at what is really important in a position. I think the book would be useful to any one beyond the beginner level. The methods used in the book do not require advanced knowledge. If you are ready to take your chess to another level and are willing to work hard at thinking, then this is an excellent book for you. (Note: I have the Kindle version and it works OK. Diagrams large enough to be readable. Some text is quite small,, but not much of a problem.)

Impressive System

This book solidifies known chess theory into an actionable thought process. When you follow the thought process (although it is hard to change your thinking at first - I found my mind wandering a lot before I could get it to cooperate with a lot of practice) the result is a clearer understanding of the position. The best thing I've noticed is that I have a newfound confidence in my evaluation during chess games.

As a side note - another reviewer noted that some of the chess diagrams incorrectly indicate the player with the move. This isn't true, although I can understand the confusion. When the author evaluates threats of the opponent, he takes the approach of 'pretend your opponent is given a second move and see what they can do', so the diagrams are from the perspective of the opposite color. If it's white to move, the author is pretending for the sake of threat analysis that black has been given a free move so you are really evaluating black's moves, despite the fact that it is white's move according to the diagram. I was also confused until I realized this.

Great book

There is a common saying that chess is 99% tactics (probably true?).
However, you don't wake up overnight knowing at least 25% of all possible tactical patterns, thus you need this book.
This book tells you that chess is also about a disciplined thinking that allows to build good positions and avoid potential blunders.
I gave it 5 stars but it is more like 4.5 (rounded), because I personally like to have ~20-50 puzzle like problems to drill each point and memorize a particular concept. Overall, this is a very good book and I would recommend it to others.

It is what it is

I should have read the book discription on this site with closer attention, I guess. INDEED, it is the equivalent of the classnotes and some simple exercises to go with them -- for a computer club. Let me put it this way... it would indeed be "Easy", if I'd sat in on the lecturtes that the book is a result of. But I could have benefitted from some screenshots/slides, and a little more expansion on the commands he DOES teach. Easy, but not easy enough without a "tutor"... for a non-hacker.

Good basic overview

Purchased this book needing a good overview of the language. It does the job, explaining structure and definitions. However, it does not take very well to the Kindle, which is odd as it is supposed to be written for the Kindle. Many words do not have spaces between them, sometimes more than two. Aside from being hard to read because of the spacing problem, I got my questions answered.
