About the Author
Adam Gerber has been using Android Studio since early beta to develop Android applications professionally and to instruct his students at the University of Chicago, where he teaches Android Application Development, among other courses. Adam is a member of the Chicago Innovation Exchange and consults on mobile technology and innovation. Adam holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois and a PhD with honors in Management Science from the Conservatoire National des Arts et M�tiers in Paris. Clifton Craig is an early adopter of Android Studio and a longtime user of the IntelliJ platform. Clifton has over 16 years of professional software development experience and 8 years of experience in various mobile technologies ranging from J2ME and BREW to iOS and Android. He has used IntelliJ and AndroidStudio on several high profile projects at companies such as MapQuest and Microsoft/Skype. A very good book, but needs some improvements

This book does a fantastic job describing Android Studio app development and supporting tools (Git, Gradle, ...). The coding projects it gives are really good, illustrating the essentials of app development. But, some of the most important android software classes that they use (e.g. Intents, Adapters, Broadcasts, Notifications, Transactions, etc) are hard to find, since they are not mentioned in either the Table of Contents or the sparse Index. If there is another edition of the book (I hope there is one), it could improve the Index, add also add a chapter discussing some important classes and methods in the SDK. This should be done before Chapter 7 about Git, where many of these classes are used without any description of them (e.g., Intents). This makes Chapter 7 particularly murky, and difficult to understand. Chapter 8 is clearer, with some discussion of android classes and methods. Then, in Chapters 9 and 10, there are a few good descriptions of android classes etal. For example, Intents are finally described near the end of Chapter 9; although, there is no reference to this in the Index. Also, what it means to inflate android Views is finally described near the start of Chapter 10, but again is not referenced in the Index. These descriptions are needed much earlier in the book, before they are actually used in the "Labs".

I would have given this book 5 stars, except for this lack of clarity, and lack of content referencing.

A great book to learn Android without much mobile development experience

This is a great book to learn Android without much mobile development experience. I went through the book and found that it successfully described the main feature of the latest Android development. It also provides four labs with sample codes. In addition, it teaches me how to use git in my project. Version control is an important lesson for beginners, but few books try to address it. Finally, I want to say it's fun to learn Android with the book.

Better Than I Dreamed Possible

But I don't know why I say that...everything Charlie Trotter has done has been better than Perfect. Actually, I did find, I think 3, recipes that I probably won't try. All of the others are now on ml "must make" list.

Interestingly, the book chapters are named from wines, the fish & seafood aren't even named in the TOC. They are dishes to go with those wines.

A couple of especially good points: every recipe has a note of Recommended Substitutions. Some of the fish will be hard to source for one who isn't a restauranteur.
And the Guide to Seasonal Seafood chart near the end is invaluable.

There are roughly 80ish recipes - if I start sourcing ingredients now & make one a week, it'll take me about a year & a half to cook my way through it (as I said, there are three of them I'm not going to try. Some will be more challenging than others, of course.

Have absolutely no idea whatsoever where I'll get live baby eels, but that's one I'm going to have to do. Guess I'll start looking for the frog legs. I'm having a big party in June where they'll make great hors d'oeuvres. The very first recipe is for Smelts...but they've stopped running for this season, so will have to just salivate over that while I wait for their next season.

Who should buy this book? Either you're willing and able to put a lot of time and effort into sourcing ingredients and preparing them (and are capable of doing it and willing to spend the money) - or you want an elegant coffee table book. This isn't for the casual cook

Not for the neophyte cook

This is a superb well-explained & beautifully illustrated book . I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I want to warn buyers that the recipes are mostly complicated, time-consuming & some involve hard-to-find ingredients, even if you live in a metropolis. I am, frankly , a very good cook & appreciate that this is not the "newlywed cookbook" as most these days are. But it is not easy living up to a 5-star chef's expectations.
The good news is that an experienced cook will find a few ways to cut corners in many of the recipes & the best news, I can say from experience, is that if you can even approximate the photos in the book, you will receive more oohs & aahs than you ever did before.

funny, has good moral stories

My 8 year old was introduced to David Williams when a friend of mine bought her Mr Stink. She likes books but is not crazy about reading. She, however, couldn't put down Mr Stink the moment she laid her hand on it. I bought the entire set of David Williams. I have never seen her read so ferociously. She finished the entire set in about 2 weeks, considering she has never read a book thicker than 200 pages before! The books are very engaging, funny, has good moral stories, and teach good lessons. Great books!

Excellent introduction to manipulator analysis and control

This is the book nicely describing kinematics, statics, and dynamics of manipulators. There is a strong mathematics tool used but very understandable. I reccommend the books to students or teachers of kinematics for its nice mathematical description. I wish to find the books of the same clarity for other topics I teach.

A good book for anyone who builds circuits on PC boards.

Mr. Kordyban has brought out a great little book here: "Hot Air Rises and Heat Sinks". This book cleverly debunks many of the old myths about thermal management for circuit boards and rack-mounted equipment. If you like my writing, you'll like his. He's a great story-teller. This book is LITERALLY not of much use to an engineer who's designing an IC - but it WILL be of great use to the IC applications engineers who have to help the customer get the ICs built up on boards, and get the heat out. I recommend this book to anyone who builds circuits on PC boards, even if they only get a LITTLE warm. This book is specially good for educating young engineers - who have never had any chance to learn this in school. Kordyban USES computers - but does not just trust them - he checks the computer results with sanity checks and calibration tests and sample problems. Excellent technical writing, and fun to read. Good man!

This book is basically crap unless you know nothing about heat transfer and electronics cooling. Maybe worth a brief read-through if you are just starting in the field. This book is probably better suited for an engineer (or not) with less formal knowledge of heat transfer, like an electrical engineer, except that the author blasts them as know-nothings throughout the book.

Get Steinberg's Cooling Techniques for Electronic Equipment if you want something useful for real applications.

What's wrong with me ? I now find thermal flow interesting !

Curse Mr. Kordyban - he's get me all interested in thermal flow now. This book is great ! It flows [huh] really well, is relatively humourous (no, really), and gets across some basic lessons in electronics cooling. A must read for all you overclockers who are having to put bigger and bigger heatsinks on everything. I followed a few simple recommendations in this book, (just repositioning a few components and adjusting airflow) and now my computers run much cooler (and more stably). Now I can't walk into a datacenter without looking for the ac units, and checking for fans, drive positioning etc. This is a field that I'm convinced is going to be much more important in the future - this handbook is a great introduction to the field and some real practical things you can use right now. If you are looking for some honking big text book, this isn't for you. But who is ?

Thailand Unmasked

The fact that the author is a colleague has hopefully not had too great an influence on my view that this is a very important book. After all, I'm not going to get any personal or professional profit from an endorsement, even a ringing one like this. Millions of tourists visit Thailand every year, but whether they are aware of how the politics of the place actually work is another matter. Arguably, Thailand is more confusing than ever, because at least formally, it now seems to be a Western-style parliamentary monarchy. This arrangement, however, is very much the lipstick on the pig, so far as the author is concerned. In 'Thailand Unhinged', the reader is taken through the history of twentieth-century Thailand, and though the focus is very much on the modern era of Thaksin and after, the author paints with a broad brush. The chapter in which he steps back to reflect on the current state of Thai society and culture contains some particularly lively and illuminating pages on the economics of the sex trade in Bangkok.

The main message of the book, though, is that real power in Thailand is wielded by an informal network that comprises the royal family and its hangers on, big business, and military 'big men' who can back up their threats with lethal violence if this cosy arrangement is threatened. Adjectives like 'excoriating' spring to mind for the author's treatment of the Thai political class. No-one, apart from the much put-upon ordinary Thai who would like a larger say in his or her own government, emerges from these pages in good shape. No violence has been too awful, no trickery too vile, for it to have figured in modern Thai history. At the same time, perhaps even for that very reason, the author manages to avoid making the story a simple one of good versus evil, and to penetrate to the heart of the power relationships in the Thai polity.

This is not strictly an academic work, but it is carefully documented. There are plenty of references for those who want to follow up on the factual claims about recent Thai history that are being made. Even as the book stands, however, it is likely the author will persuade you that the true shape of Thai politics is frequently only obscured by the rhetoric and the legal and constitutional structures in terms of which the country is formally governed. At the same time, his passion for the place and its people shines through; despite all the problems he relates, he retains at least some qualified and cautious optimism that a better future is possible, and even has some practical suggestions to make about the nature of the changes required. Published at a time of great change within Thailand itself, this timely book deserves to find a wide audience. It is unlikely to win its author any friends amongst those currently in power there, but it is a very good introduction to anyone wishing to know more about contemporary Thai politics.

Thailands missing democracy

Today I finished the book, after reading in it all of the time I had becaurse it was like reading a detective novel.

I ordered it in Amazon the day I had finished Pasuk Phongpaichit & Chris Bakers "Thaksin" half year old up to date reprinting. These books fits good together and are of current interest after the long demonstration in Bangkok, this year, which startet the 13th marts and first finished more than 2 month later after 88 killed by military, and 37 missing.

And I can se that Ferrara, becaurse he lives outside Thailand, can tell more abouth the dark side abouth who that have the power in Thailand. And as he write, 100 years ago there was more free press in Thailand than today. And as he write, back i 1290 CE the Thailand king had on his throne written much about being a democratic and a free contry, nearly including the words we connects to France under the revolution 500 years later: "Liberty, equality, and fraternity". And how the military and richt persons sinse 1932 have gone the oppostit way, after they startet having the power, to say that people out in country are not clever enough to understand politic and thereby wouting.

In some ways it's a shame that we in the book don't have about the demonstration this year, but after reading the book it's clear to se that it would happen as it's the same that has happened againg and again since 1932.

He writes that that Thaksin problem was not that he, as other who was choused to rule the contry, in his pcket got money from the state, but as he got the people to think about democracy. The power they had by wouting. And this made the generals remove Thaksin.

Some of the many references in the book was to BBC. And then going to BBC in my PC I found that BBC was much deeper in whatr was going on in Thailand, than my danis news.

In the book there allso is a good chapter "Thailand for sale" which has much to do with prostitution concerning money and foreingers.

Before having finished the book I went to Amazon to se if Ferrara had been writing other book about politiks but as a shame not. But I'm looking forewards to see if he will be writing more of the same kind.

Great understanding of the challenging Thai past

I am traveling to South East Asia later this year. Part of why I am going there is to get a better understanding of the business environment and hopefully what makes the region such a hot bed of opportunity. When I sat down to analyze what I already knew about the region; I realized it wasn't that much. So I fell back on my undergraduate training in political science to try and get a better understanding of what had happened in the recent past, and what could be expected in the future.
After reading Federico Ferrara's work I feel I have a much better understanding of how the Thai political process has worked for the past 75 years, and what could be on the horizon. This book is broken down into 6 chapters, each taking a look at unique aspects of the political reality that is Thailand. While each chapter could stand on its own, the combined picture and history is what the book's value is really apparent.
In all the truth the first chapter of the book was challenging to get though. Not because of the writing, which was great, but the topic. All the abrupt changes to the Thai political status over the recent history makes for challenging reading, but also underscores how challenging it must have been for a country to survive all those regime changes.

About the Author
Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, the illegitimate daughter of a poverty-stricken woman, Kate, whom she believed to be her older sister. She began work in service but eventually moved south to Hastings where she met and married a local grammar-school master. At the age of forty she began writing about the lives of the working-class people with whom she had grown up, using the place of her birth as the background to many of her novels.

nice characters ended up becoming bad for no reason. made hard to follow. dont get the trilogy. the movie stopped at tilly and her boss togerther. that ok compared to the unexplained events that happen afterwards.
Love Cookson's other books tho.
