Filthy, Dirty, and Loving

I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review.

I love this book. For a debut novel Katherine did an excellent job. To tell you the truth I found no grammar errors. Wish I could say the same for a lot of established authors. I love everything about Cain. Everything from his filthy mouth to his protectiveness towards Jess. And the lady who wrote the review that she couldn't read the whole thing because of the abuse. There was no abuse. Even the one time Jess accidentally got hurt. It broke Cain's heart.

Fathers, daughters and one too many suitors

I like a good fight book especially when the dude is as filthy, abrasive, cocky and sexy as Cain. Jessica is his boss's daughter and just like Cain, she is also her father's property and has to follow his rules and orders. Too bad she has other plans in mind for her life and future happiness and they do not include marrying the mob guy her father has picked out for her.
For a first time author this book was really good...chock full of action, steamy sex and a storyline that was compelling to read even if it was nothing too original. The end and events leading up to it were not surprising (I could see what was coming) but the journey to get there was an enjoyable adventure with some nasty bumps along the way.
I recommend this one to all my MMA/fight romance reading friends. It doesn't seem to be out in e-book yet (I only see paperback available) but I received an advanced free copy to read and review so I am guessing the kindle version will be coming soon.

Hot, sexy and dangerous!

I was given this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

To be honest I was wondering how this book would go considering this is Katherine Lace's first self published book. I was pleasantly pleased as it was well written and the characters were cohesive and fully developed. I loved the push and pull of Jess the main female character and her domineering mob boss father. Dear old dad seemed to think he could dictate and control his daughter's life but she had other plans. Add in Cain the sexy, alpha MMA fighter who works for the dad but had his eyes on the daughter. The storyline is filled with hot sex, punches and suspense. I look forward to more books by this new author!!

The book is funny and definitely what we were expecting

I bought this as a gift for my friend. The book is funny and definitely what we were expecting. However, I was VERY unhappy when I opened the package and saw marks on the front cover. It was especially disappointing since it was a gift for someone else. I'm assuming the marks are from glue or something similar. Luckily they aren't too bad, but definitely noticeable. Anyway, if you're looking for a funny read that's guaranteed to make you laugh, this is a good purchase.

Awesome conversation piece. I purchased this as a gift for someone who loves the Tinder Nightmares Instagram page. The book itself is super fun and filled with hilarious "nightmare" conversations. The book itself was slightly beat up when it arrived but I didn't have time to exchange it. The cover was dusty and had markings on it. Surprisingly, this is the first book I've ever received in this condition when buying a new book from Amazon.

This book is extremely helpful, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone preparing for the SAT! Erica explains each grammar rule succinctly and clearly with ample examples to solidify your understanding. I studied this book everyday for a month, and it helped me raise my writing score from the mid 600s to 800 on the SAT! A must have!

An outstanding resource

Erica Meltzer has the ability to put her instruction into student--and teacher--friendly terms. It has been helpful to me, and I am an old-school, diagram the sentences, grammarian. Many younger teachers did not grow up in schools that presented the clear and detailed grammar lessons that I grew up experiencing, so I think it would be a great reference for them. Students will probably understand more about grammar than they ever have before, especially if their background has been shaky in this area. Well-done!

First it took more them 30 days to ship. Then you pay for an 900 A4 format book. More than 900 pages on step-by-step print screens with not more than 2 sentences per page. 200 pages for basically environment setup, including Jdeveloper installation. A total waste. Be advised, if you need a giant printed tutorial, then that's your book.

Wake up publishers

First of all, let me make clear that this review is based on the sample. After reading the only review this edition has and downloading the sample, I decided not to buy it - even though having this book right now on my kindle would have helped me a lot - I decided to buy the print version instead.

Why is this edition so bad?
- the font, as mentioned in the other review, is different from other books and not very legible at all.
- the price is far too high. In my opinion, a kindle book should be cheaper than the print version. Where I live this isn't the case, it's about 10$ more expensive to get the kindle version. (Source for print version isn't amazon.com though)
- now to the actual dealbreaker: it doesn't have page numbers.

Clearly, the third point isn't a problem of this particular ebook, but rather of all scientific kindle books. And really, I can't understand what the publishers are thinking. I need this book for a university class, and if someone mentions something from page so and so I need to be able to look that up and not search around until I find it. It gets even worse with actual scientific publication (not introduction/text books like this one), where I'd need to quote something for a paper: I need to be able to refer to a specific page and thus kindle becomes a no go in those situations. I'm not asking for much - they can stick with their percentages and kindle locations, that's fine by me, just make clear what print edition the book is an electronic version of, and then add a page number at the end of each print page - in [] or in {} or whatever brackets are not needed for other purposes. So, if the publisher of this book reads this - think about your target audience and be a tad more realistic.

Formatting problems for the Kindle Edition

Don't buy this book for the Kindle. It's in a different font (which I didn't even know was possible) that's a little hard to read and (I assume because of this) it loads really slowly. I'm actually conscious of the lag between pages. It also doesn't format three-line-translations well. And it's the only book that's made my Kindle crash.

I'm sorry this review appears for other editions as well. I think the book itself definitely deserves more than two stars. Just the Kindle edition is incredibly poor.

Fantastic Book on Hiring

I just finished reading a pre-release copy of the book Who by Geoff Smart and Randy Street. Wow, it's good. Really good.
Geoff and his father Brad Smart are well known as the team that popularized Topgrading, a thorough interview process that takes the success rate for new hires from the average of about 50% to just over 90%. I don't know of a business owner alive who wouldn't love to increase the effectiveness of the interview and hire more effectively.
Smart and Street are experts in their field - they are paid huge sums of money to do this for some of the biggest and best companies in the world. Their research estimates that the average hiring mistake costs employers 15 times the salary of the incorrect hire. The number sounds absurdly high, but when you include salary, lost productivity and opportunity costs, it's plausible. Frightening.
Who is a fast and simple read, but is heavy on content. It begins with a discussion of what they call voodoo hiring, or the process most business owners use during the interview process, and it was painful for me. I'm guilty of voodoo hiring and I'm guessing most of you are, too. Much of my process is guessing and gut feel, and is done over too short of a period of time. It's not hard to see the need for a change.
Next comes a simple explanation of why hiring "A" players is so important. They define an "A" player as the right superstar for the job, a talented person who fits in well with your company culture. B and C hires cost you money; A's make you rich.
The meat of the book is about the four keys to what they call the A Method : Scorecard, Source, Select and Sell. I can't do justice to the brilliance of the system in this short review, but here are the basics. The scorecard is your blueprint for the job - not a description, but the criteria you will be using to judge the person who is ultimately hired. Source is how you find your candidates, primarily referrals and recruiting. Select goes over the four interviews that need to be conducted - screening, Topgrading, focused and reference. Sell is important and often overlooked, selling your top candidate on taking the job. With great people in demand, you need to fight for your best people.
Many of us have read Topgrading - it's a long read but describes the theory well. Even so, countless managers still have trouble implementing the system. Who bridges that gap and helps us see the whole process - then implement it well. This book just became required reading at Greenleaf Book Group, and the process is our new hiring process. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve hiring practices and remove a huge piece of the risk.

Best Hiring Book Available

I've been working with an executive coach for years to improve our success rate in hiring, and have learned a lot of hard lessons from hiring toxic people. Usually these things happened by a) not defining the role crisply and ensuring I know what I'm hiring for and why b) poisoning the interviews with things like leading questions, "selling" the candidate on the position, or giving too much information so the candidate parrotted the right answers to me; or c) failing to be really data-driven in managing people and figure out what works and doesn't over time. Of all the books that I've read, "Who" is by far the closest to the hiring and management processes I've developed with my coach's guidance. (And my coach is a GENIUS at hiring, by the way. He should write his own book.)

What's in a resume?

Who, by Geoff Smart and Randy Street, is a surprisingly quick and informative read. Truth be told, hiring the right people isn't easy and this book does a pretty good job of outlining a reasonable blueprint for finding and keeping the right people. What is a resume? According to George Buckley, the CEO of 3M, "It's a record of a person's career with all of the accomplishments embellished and all the failures removed." Sound familiar? More and more these day's chemistry and commitment weigh as heavily as talent, but high maintenance talent is usually a nightmare! Global competition moves much too fast for hiring mistakes. The Scorecard, Source, Select and Sell method, while a bit more extensive than the typical hiring process, seems to have a logical premise; thus, my favorable rating. Pound for pound, this little book produces and you'll want to keep it close, especially when you're thinking of hiring new candidates. Bon Appetite!

About the Author
Vandana Shiva is a physicist, world-renowned environmental thinker and activist, and a tireless crusader for economic, food, and gender justice. She is the author and editor of many influential books, including Making Peace with the Earth, Soil Not Oil, Staying Alive, Stolen Harvest, Water Wars, and Globalization’s New Wars. Dr. Shiva is the recipient of more than twenty international awards, among them the Right Livelihood Award (1993); the John Lennon-Yoko Ono Grant for Peace (2008); The Sydney Peace Prize (2010); and the Calgary Peace Prize (Canada, 2011). In addition, she is a board member of the World Future Council and one of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization (whose other members include Jerry Mander, Edward Goldsmith, Ralph Nader, and Jeremy Rifkin). She travels frequently to speak at conferences around the world.
