Dr. Andrew Whitmore has been teaching Information Systems for several years at a number of institutions including the University of South Florida and Simmons College. He holds a PhD in Information Science from the State University of New York at Albany, an MS in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Economics from Cornell University. He has worked in industry as an IT Auditor for Ernst & Young LLP and as an Economist at the Consumer Price Index.

Good Content, But a Bit Unprofessional

Don't get me wrong, if you're new to XSLT and aren't a strong with computers, this book will help you. It's well written and provides a clear entry into XSLT.

However, I did expect a little bit more. The book is essentially self-published, and looks more like a course guide I would buy at the university bookstore for one of my classes. The formatting is basic HTML material printed on 8.5" x 11" pages, and appears as if it's just a printout of a webpage.

All in all, it's still a good little book to get your feet wet with XSLT and XPath, but don't expect what some other reviewers call a textbook, because it's not.

Good brief introduction to XSLT with some shortcomings

This book is a quick and easy introduction to XSLT/XPath. The first half (slightly more than half) of the book features a variety of examples that deals with creating style sheets referenced in XML documents and then opening them in a browser. The second half features various examples using an XSLT processor (Saxon) to transform XML documents into html documents, CSV files, multiple XML files, etc. One fun example is in chapter 8; visualizing XML data using the Google Maps API. I should say I was fairly familiar with XML before reading this book, but not in a web-based context, and I was not familiar with XSLT. The book may have been a bit too basic for me, but that is OK, it is a good start. The book was well organized, straightforward and it had interesting examples.

However, as far as I could see there is nowhere to get the files for the examples. I had to type every example by hand, which gets tedious. The good news is that I did not find any typos in the examples, but there were typos in the text. The examples were mostly web and browser related whilst the XML I have been dealing with so far has mostly been related to databases, buffer storage, information exchange between systems, and other communication (not web based). In my opinion the focus of the book was therefore a bit narrow. The author also made some questionable claims such as “XLink is currently of limited usefulness as it hasn’t been fully implemented in many browsers.” Well, I’ve used billion dollar applications implementing XLink that do not use browsers to operate.

Overall this is a decent short book featuring good explanations and interesting examples, and I do recommend this book. However, I also feel the book had some shortcomings.

Gratitude

Thank you, Dr. Brown for presenting your research and teachings on "The Power of Vulnerability". I am deeply grateful. I write this review after only listening to five of the six CD's contained in the audio learning course! For those of you not familiar with Dr. Brown's research, I would strongly encourage you to watch her 'Ted talk' on "The Power of Vulnerability" AND "Listening to Shame."

In this voluminous audio learning six CD course, Dr. Brown (yes, it is actually Dr. Brown speaking), effectively and humorously weaves personal real life story into her research findings/teachings. Each CD takes on a subject, with eight to eleven sub topics under each subject. CD running times range each from 58 to 73 minutes.

The "Power of Vulnerability" will require deep introspect of oneself. It will make you examine your present known vulnerabilities, and for me, uncover one's I was not aware of. Are you ready for that? Are you looking to improve your emotional health? If yes, consider Dr. Brown's audio learning course a life-saving-altering-for-the-good investment.

Make no mistake; putting Dr. Brown's teachings into 'play' requires tremendous effort and self-discipline. It requires personal PRACTICE, practice that we can apply to our everyday lives. For me, it may require a life time of practice. But that's okay, because the "Power of Vulnerability" gave me hope that I can re-introduce joy into my life. For those of you under professional counseling, like me, this audio learning course may even move you further along with your cognitive based therapy. I know for me it will. Personally, I feel "The Power of Vulnerability" will give me a set of keys that will unlock those previously closed emotional doors of "authenticity," "connection," and "courage."

A Bren'e Brown must have...

First, I am so thankful Bren'e was willing to sit through hours and hours of recording sessions so that we the listener can hear her work in her voice. This collection of work captures so much of what Bren'e has worked on in her study of Shame and vulnerability. I will listen to these 6 CDs over and over again. As a marriage and family therapist I have incorporated what I have learned from this work into every hour of my professional life. It has radically improved the way I live and love.

CD entertaining enough to be a comedy tape, good information!

I got the CD and listened to it with my spouse, who grumped about having to listen to a self-help tape on a long trip. But it was spouse who kept saying, "Wow!"

We both laughed at the way Dr. Brown delivered her information, and her humor, and illustrations of what she was talking about. She was easy to understand and gave a lot of "ah HA!" moments as you listened to what the research was showing.

A few of the ideas she put out were:
>We can only love someone else to the degree we love ourselves (then she goes on to show you how this is probably so, showing parents that the things that they are negative to in their children are actually things that they find hard to accept in themselves.
>She illustrate that many of us have gotten to the point where we do not want to be hurt so badly, that we decide not to embrace the joy that we could in our lives; because we might hurt to lose it...and so live un-actualized lives.
> She shows how we numb ourselves, using food, TV, internet, social networking and other ways; just as addicts use drugs or alcohol and is so frank and honest and blunt in all of her insight that you just feel washed of your own irritation at the idiots that confound our lives.

A win for the books!

My nephew talked nonstop about this book over the Thanksgiving holiday. Seeing as how his birth is the week after Thanksgiving I told him it would be my gift to him. As far as I have heard he was over the moon to have gotten this one and the construction book one in the series.

I have never seen my nephew sit still for longer than 3 minutes on a good day but these books cause him to lay down, completely enthralled for hours! A huge happy plus sign for me! I'm all for more books and less electronics most times.

These books are good for those just starting to play minecraft. I got this one so that I could understand the different mechanics of redstone better. It was helpful but anyone who has played the game for some time will quickly outgrow these books.

My kid picks out his bedtime story book, and more often than not it is this one. He has read it cover to cover several times. He tries to replicate the instructions from the book into his game. It's great for the minecraft obsessed kid. Gives him something to do when he's done with screens for the day.

Brooding Parables of Modern Ireland

I suppose the first thing that comes to mind when I think of these short stories is that they have a strange relevance to today's uncertain world where the personal quests for economic, romantic and psychological security are ultimately doomed to failure.

The consistent theme weaving through these stories is that of a past that haunts the characters and is their ball and chain into the present and future. The stories revolve around familiar Irish subjects: shamed priests, writers, quirky women condemned as whores, and bored and destitute farmers.

The "Night of the Quicken Trees" combines most of these subjects and is the most compelling story in the book. It takes place on a wind swept plot of land overlooking the Cliffs of Moher, the last bit of Ireland until the Arran Islands. Steeped in mysticism, this tale involves Margaret's humorous and semi-tragic race against time to have a child to replace the baby she lost from crib death. Her decision to leave her home with her child and seek a safe haven from life's threats in the Arran Islands is the most spiritual and redemptive moment in the collection of stories.

"Irish Gothic" is how I would best describe the short stories. If Flannery O'Connor were still alive and visited modern Ireland, I think her reflections would be similar.

Beautiful telling of sorrowful tales

I was captivated by each story in Blue Fields. Claire Keegan has a rare and spare voice that manages to convey the sadness of the soul, the treacherous waters called love, the messy interconnectivity of human life as played out in rural Ireland. She recognizes also that resolution and redemption often escape our desperate attempts to find peace. I loved the book and recommend it highly, but be advised that these are not your Irish barstool yarns.

Fascinating Prose from Claire Keegan

Claire Keegan's 'Walk The Blue Fields' has changed my mind on short stories. Like a secret threshold I crossed over into an old Irish world. The individual tales in this book reminded me of stories my own heart didn't know until the words came alive with sound on the page written with the Irish dialect that engages one immediately.

Ms. Keegan writes with an extraordinary and enchanting beauty and I felt transported and wishing for a return to Ireland and the feelings of attachment to my great grandparents. I also felt more connected to my own inner world and am grateful to this author for that, also. There was also a dramatic ending to the stories, a halt that has stayed with me and returns to me.

Lines as "But however she changed her behaviour, she could do nothing about her nature" from my favorite story "Night of the Quicken Trees" made me smile at the universality of such a truth; I see it in my counseling profession.

The stories in Walk The Blue Fields are not all light and that is what I liked about them, too. Real life is oftentimes a harsh mixture of light and dark. I also know my many writer friends will enjoy the richness of these short stories and I will give them a copy.

I'm so grateful that my son introduced me to Ms. Keegan and gave me her lovely book this very Christmas teaching me once more that this mother can learn from her grown child.

About the Author
Soumyajit Mukherjee is a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India where he teaches structural geology and stratigraphy. He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Earth Sciences. He received the Hutchison Young Scientist Award from IUGS, and worked as a Guest Researcher at the Hans Ramberg Tectonic Lab, Uppsala University, Sweden.

Kieran F. Mulchrone is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics, School of Mathematical Sciences, University College, Cork where he runs the M.Sc. in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing. His research delves into the interface between structural geology and applied mathematics. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Structural Geology.
