Warning: This book may prevent you from ever having a job again

I bought this book and several others in a fit of desperation, feeling like I was going nowhere in life and had no idea what I wanted to do. Free-Range Human was not only the best of the books I bought, it has achieved a level of esteem in my eyes second only to the Bible.

It truly changed my life. I was already running a small tutoring practice and Marianne gave me the courage to expand it online and pursue, not a career but a life. A life where my family comes first and I don't have to give up holidays. A life where I'm not waist deep in student debt for a job I may never get and might not even like when I do. A life where I can go get a pedicure in the middle of the day just because I feel like it.

That may not be the life you envision and that's ok! The whole point of this book is that you can have the life YOU want and it is totally possible. I went from having a few local tutoring students to running an online private school where my kids graduate with their own businesses (courtesy of FRH, of course) or on their way to associates degrees.

Of course the fear sets in sometimes and I start rummaging around in researching different careers, but I'm always aghast at the loss of freedom and potential every job presents. It leaves me with renewed enthusiasm to work harder and expand my school.

So read with caution: no job can substitute the life you can create. You'll never go back.

This book is dangerous... in the best sense of the word. If your life and career have been built upon conventional wisdom, reading this book may subject your life to major upheaval.

But if you relish rejecting the status quo - as I do - then this book is for you.

Few books brought tears...

Few books brought tears to my eyes and now "Free Range" joins that list. It's an entirely different way of living your life from the professional perspective. I have always had trouble following orders and holding jobs (my longest JUST ended after a year), but this book puts into perspective, "why?". If travel and/or being your own boss is your aim, this is a must read.

The Shrimp and the Goby

Many of the reviewers here have talked about the disappointing ending to this novel, and while I agree, I don't think UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN is meant to be read as a traditional mystery, ending in all the suspects gathered in the drawing room waiting to hear the great detective's conclusions. To me it was a fascinating look at the passage of time, and how people move through different chapters of their lives. Like THE DEVOTION OF SUSPECT X, it's not really a whodunit or a whydunit: it's more like glimpses of people's lives over time, the way we really see our friends and acquaintances -- with imperfect knowledge, in only one context, and always from the outside looking in.

If you are just sitting down to begin this book, let me recommend that you make a cast of characters. Just a few words about each will suffice, and you will be glad you did when the narrative jumps several years and new characters enter the scene. Unless you are very familiar with Japanese names (I am not), you will have to flip back pages all the time to figure out if you've met these new ones before. (It's a safe bet that any character mentioned by name in the book is going to be important enough to write down.) Once I made my list (200 pages into the novel), everything was much easier!

The narrative begins in the 70s and ends 20 years later, with glimpses of the changes of the world in every stop along the way. We see the rise of computers and computer games; the economic boom and the bursting of the bubble; Rubik's Cubes and Super Mario Brothers; and much more. Reading about these was my favorite part of the novel, and I think it's the heart of it, somehow: you don't really get deeply into any one character's head, so you find yourself drawing a portrait of a group of people, seen from outside, moving through time. Perhaps because I am of an age with Keigo Higashino, I remember all these periods very well, and these glimpses called back memories. It was fascinating to see the same trends played out in Japan that I remembered from life in the States.

Higashino is very lucky in his translator. There must be countless times when Alexander O. Smith has to decide how much, if any, explanatory description to give, not to mention when he has to produce realistic slang-laden dialogue from, say, the 1980s. He does a wonderful job: the writing is seamless and the characters have reasonably distinct voices (although, again, individual character portraits are not the strong suit of this novel). An American reader can shoot through this 560-page novel without having to google every 10 pages, and without puzzling over the characters' motivations and attitudes. I think this is largely the result of a superb translation, and I'm glad to see that Smith has translated other Higashino novels too; I will be reading MALICE next, and I can't wait!

"Under the Sun" Is A Fabulous Read With Numerous Surprises

I couldn't put this book down and read it in three days, off and on. It is a big book, 554 pages, but simply enthralling. A dogged detective follows the murder of a pawnbroker in an abandoned building followed by a mother's mysterious death by kitchen gas that didn't fit the bill for suicide or accidental death. The two deaths are related only via a payment of a large amount of money to the mother by the pawnbroker. The Osaka detective has an instinctive sense of suspicion and follows it or 19-years, even past his retirement. There are numerous other characters in this tale set in Japan including children and psychopaths. This is not a bloody story, however, it is a mystery full of developments and nefarious dealings that follow a 19-year path including technological developments, trends, criminal enterprises and corporate infiltrations and thefts of millions of yens. Kudos to Keigo Higashino and translator Alexander O. Smith and Joseph Reeder for bringing this marvelous tale to readers of English.

the only way to find the LotR sites, but vague in places

This really is the only way to ever hope to find any of the film locations in NZ. Other guides & websites mention a few of the places, but this is the only book to collect all the info. in one place, & in a handy, travel-size book too.

However, Brodie's directions are often vague & incomplete. Maps would help, but simply including specifics like "drive 15km up the mountain & look for the DoC sign that says XYZ" would be just as useful. The current directions only say "drive up the road to the film location" or somesuch. This book really seems geared to people using GPS.

In NZ last week, I purchased the 'extended' version of this book, but I haven't had time to compare the text to see if it's been improved. However, the new version is a larger format, more of a coffee-table book, so it wouldn't be suitable to carrying on the road. Perhaps you could photocopy pages for traveling.

took it to New Zealand

You can purchase this book is some NewZealand stores and save carrying it with your luggage. I saw it at the airport. It was good at orienting you to where different scenes were shot. A head's up: Many places were used for background, while the action was shot in a studio or created on a computer. Also, many scenes in the movie feature scenes shot all over new zealand and since they are together in the movie you assume they are also together in real life. Example: when arwen rides away from the nazgul, the horse scene (shot with a double by the way) is in one area, the river she enters in another area, and the when she turns to face the nazgul, that river is yet somewhere else. I highly recommend the area around queenstown and glenorche.

Weimar Classic

I cannot believe this book is not available in paperback. I have never written a review of a book before, but this is horrible, and I felt I should do my part. Both of these previous reviewers barely touched why this book is amazing. I read this in German, but even if its beautiful style is lost in a horrible translation, it would still be a must read. Remarque's "masterpiece" does not touch this book, and here is why: Remarque's book, very well written, is fiction, and designed to manipulate you into being pacifist. The ideals conform with mine well enough, that I favor it being read by school children and such, but it is still just a well written textbook for pacifism. His character, Paul Baumer, is clingy and often pathetic. Can you imagine shooting yourself in the foot, just to stay close to a friend? Talk about a lack of self-identity. Reading Toller's book on the other hand this book, a mere 176 pages in my version, I learned the history of an entire generation. I followed a great life, hearing an insider account of one the most interesting periods in history. I have never learned so much from one book. And the style, wow. I loved this book. Imagine conquering Time Square, then defending Manhattan from the Federal Government. That is about the equivalent of perhaps 40 pages of this book. A naive child in a naive generation (nation), poet, student in France, nationalist, soldier, revolutionary leader, prisoner, play writer, persecuted member of a sub-human race. There are a few elements of the book that feel like kitsch, but they are very human and open our eyes. I had the feeling here of reading someone who really bled with his heart through all of this, and that is important whether one agrees with him or not. To repeat this novel is human, where Remarque's is dogmatic.
I still feel like I have not given this book its due. Order it from a library if it cost too much here, read it and after your done give your review. If you are a student, get it from a library or used bookstore. 40+ dollars, come on, that is way too much! Although, it is good that someone has published it. Imagine if A Brave New Wold was 40+ dollars. That is what I mean by the injustice here.

This book, although it may seem on the cover to be a dry autobiography, contains a lot of valuable information about WWI Germany from the perspective of a noted Jewish author of the time. There is also the added bonus of a couple chase scenes... A quick read

Lukas, author of Forgotten Holocaust: The Poles Under German Occupation , here assembles oral histories by 60 Christian Polish men and women who survived the Nazi occupation. Told in plain language, their moving testimonies recount the sadism, mass murders, deportations and imprisonment which Poles suffered at the hands of Hitler's invading army. These first-person narratives demonstrate that thousands of Poles courageously rescued Jews, at great risk to their own lives. One point of controversy is Lukas's intention with this oral history to refute the "stereotype" that Poles were anti-Semites who "at a minimum were indifferent to the Germans' treatment of the Jews. . . ." Yet, in an introductory essay, he supportively quotes comments about the "unresisting attitude" and "passivity" of Jewish victims of Nazism. In this treatment, he largely ignores the torrent of anti-Semitic legislation, daily brutality and prejudice that many Polish Jews faced prior to the German occupation.

Korbonski was a prominent leader of the Polish underground resistance to German occupation during World War II, and, since leaving Poland in 1947, he has been a major figure among Polish political exiles in the United States. He provides a rapid-fire review of efforts by the Polish underground to assist Jews and to inform the Western allies of the destruction of Polish Jews. The second half of the book contradicts postwar charges of Polish anti-Semitism and reproduces statements and documents emphasizing Polish assistance to Jews. This vigorous partisan contribution to the ongoing debate about Polish attitudes and actions during the Jewish Holocaust is a valuable statement by a leading participant. For collections specializing in these subjects. Lukas presents a selection of oral and written memoirs of some 60 Polish men and women who lived through the German occupation of Poland in World War II. The contributors derive from a wide social and political background and their recollections, ranging from a few paragraphs to a dozen pages, are highly episodic rather than analytic or evaluative. Most discuss some aspect of the Jewish Holocaust, and some describe their efforts on behalf of Jews. Only a few refer candidly to animosities between Poles and Jews. There is a long litany of the brutalities of the occupation, only occasionally relieved by isolated acts of heroism and generosity. Learn the Truth About Poland's Assistance to Jews

From time to time, there are vague and unsubstantiated accusations that Poles did not do enough to assist the Jews during the German occupation of Poland and the ensuing Holocaust. Others gloss over the 3 million Polish gentiles murdered by the Germans during WWII. This book is a collection of eyewitness accounts of both the Holocaust and of Polish assistance to Jews. And, remember, that in Poland, unlike other German-occupied countries, the death penalty was imposed for the slightest assistance to Jews.

An Information-Packed, Misrepresented Book

Richard C. Lukas has provided a detailed anthology of Poles who had undergone the brutal German conquest and occupation of Poland during WWII. The reader of this book becomes immediately aware of the fact that not only Jews but also gentile Poles suffered constant humiliation, privation, torture and large-scale death in the hands of the German Nazi occupant. The testimony of Iwo Cyprian Pogonowski (pp. 139-142) is especially revealing in that it includes discussion of his experiences as an inmate of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Henryk Wolinski (pp. 177-181) provides detail about his involvement in the aid of the Polish underground (AK) to Jews during their Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 1943. Wolinski soundly refutes charges that the AK did not provide more arms to the Jews because of anti-Semitic attitudes. He shows that the AK always had a severe shortage of arms, even a year later, when it came out in open warfare against the Germans.

This book includes mention of seldom-discussed factors tending to limit Polish aid to fugitive Jews. This not only includes the German-imposed death penalty for the slightest Polish assistance to Jews, but also the danger of fugitive Jews denouncing both would-be Polish rescuers and other Jews currently being hidden (Jackowski, p. 77; Kierszniewski, p. 90).

The careful (or even cursory) reader of this book can easily see that it has been egregiously misrepresented by he Publisher's Weekly review posted above. The claim that prewar and interwar Polish anti-Semitism had been ignored can be dispelled just by looking in the index (p. 194) which shows it discussed in no less than ten pages! The claim that prewar Polish Jews experienced "daily brutality and prejudice" is very much debatable. Based on direct personal experience, Januszewski (p. 79) points out that, while anti-Semitic legislation and incidents definitely occurred, most Poles got along well with Jews. He is of the opinion that prewar Polish anti-Semitism had been exaggerated. Wolinski, widely respected in both Polish and Jewish circles, is of the opinion that Polish anti-Semitism tended to die down in the face of common misfortunes caused by the German occupant (p. 178).

Of course, when they occurred, Polish-Jewish prejudices had been mutual, as candidly admitted by one Jewish scholar cited by Lukas (p. 9). Elsewhere, the Dubiks (p. 64) suggest that Polish anti-Semitism had been fueled by the prewar Jewish dominance of commerce and by the postwar Jewish over-representation in the hated Communist police establishment. Jackowski (p. 76) suggests that Polish anti-Semitism had been much stronger in eastern than in central Poland owing to the large number of Jews who had collaborated with the invading Soviet Communist forces. In fact, Czelny (p. 40) provides an eyewitness account of a group of Jewish militiamen guarding a group of Polish soldiers who had been disarmed by the invading Soviet armies.

The Publisher's Weekly review insinuates that Lukas was expressing an anti-Semitic opinion by suggesting that Jews were largely passive during the Holocaust itself. In fact, Jewish passivity has been discussed by numerous authors, including Jewish ones. For instance, the eminent Jewish psychiatrist, Bruno Bettelheim, cited by Lukas (p. 11), came out strongly against Jewish passivity. Does this make Bettelheim an anti-Semite in spite of himself? Furthermore, none of the authors of this volume presents Jewish passivity in any sort of pejorative manner other than perhaps the fact that most Jews seemed to be in denial about what was happening to them for a long time. Martin (pp. 117-118) discusses her experiences with Jews in this regard. Also, for a long time, Jews had tended to think of Germans as a cultured people (p. 47) for whom acts of genocide would be unimaginable. The Poles, in contrast, knew immediately what the Germans had in store for them, as Poland had been the recipient of German aggression for at least the last thousand years. For this reason alone, Poles were more prone to take up arms than the Jews.

The fragile past

My interest in this book is twofold. First, as an historian I have been delighted to see the growing importance of oral history, a much needed counter point to the grand narratives of the powerful and public. My second interest in the book is a more personal and passionate one. My father is a Pole and though he avoided German brutalities he was taken by the Russians as a 17 year-old soldier on the Eastern Front. Until operation Barbarossa he was shunted from Siberia, the Arctic circle and then finally to the UK via Central Asia, Persia and the Cape. He flew in the Polish Air Force until the end of hostilities. Through my Polish family I have leaned much about the personal horrors of war, starvation, concentration camps and cultural annihilation. But this repository of the past is fragile and needs to be recorded and read. Thank you Richard Lukas.
