About the Author

Antoine C. Bret is Associate Professor�at the Universidad Castilla La Mancha. His main research interests focus on theoretical plasma physics and astrophysics.

Leaves all other Macbeths in the dust

Both Patrick Stewart and Kate Fleetwood were outstanding. They put so much feeling into the words that one forgot they were using Shakespeare's prose. I have seen other productions with well known actors and this outshone them all.
The set and the witches were also terrifyingly good. I highly recommend this production.

Very readable introduction to modular forms

A classical and computational introduction is a new book by L.J.P. Kilford. New enough that it even has reference to the resolution of Serre's conjecture. But this book is really an introduction to the classical aspects of the theory of modular forms and it does a great job. I took a few days to read through the book (of course, ignoring the details and proofs) and I would say it is very enjoyable. Kilford adds in lots of funny and quirky anecdotes, most of which I've read from different places but it's nice to have everything collected in one book. For example, he mentioned Lang's famous foreword:

"It is possible to write endlessly on elliptic curves. (This is not a threat.)"

I remembered being so tickled when I first saw this in Lang's book.

Back to this book. Even with the subject of modular forms it is the same. He knows he can't possibly explain everything and so is not afraid to be a little vague at times and cite the various references to where more in depth discussions can be found. Thus, he is able to accomplish much in this modest sized (200+ pages) book. My one small complaint is the title should not include "and computational". I found the last chapter on computational aspects too brief. He highlighted some history, discussed MAGMA and SAGE, giving some examples of the codes used, but I believe that this is not enough for someone interested in computing modular forms to get started on. And the appendixes on MAGMA and SAGE codes are each one page long with two longish lines of commands.

A Solid Introduction to the Subject

As a master's student, I'm using Kilford's book for an introductory class on modular forms. I like Kilford's style and choice of material. He does a very good job of explaining the necessary material and referencing other sources for more complicated material.

However, the manuscript itself is ridden with typos. Some of the typos are humorous and provide an opportunity to test one's knowledge and understanding. For example, I could readily identify that Kilford switched even and odd in one of the homework exercises. However, some of the typos, particularly in definitions or proofs create imposing barriers to progress. Kilford's errata includes half a page of typos, while my instructor and the previous class compiled a list of 3 pages not already included in the errata.

As long as you have an instructor or adviser who can identify and correct any typos, the book is a good reference, but I find myself constantly checking the class notes for the correct definitions and statements, although it only takes a few minutes to edit all the typos yourself, it seems we are constantly finding new ones. I would expect that the second edition (I expect there will be a second edition) will quickly become a standard reference guide for those beginning to learn the subject.

About the Author

Dr. Bryan Bledsoe is an emergency physician with a special interest in prehospital care. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and his medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.� He completed his internship at Texas Tech University and residency training at Scott and White Memorial Hospital/Texas A&M College of Medicine. Dr. Bledsoe is board certified in emergency medicine and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Not worth it

I've been in EMS for over 20 years and when I took the CCEMT-P class I bought this book to read "ahead" before the class. The book read like any Paramedic textbook and did VERY little to prepare me for the UMBC CCEMT course, it had little to no correlation to the material taught in the course (the book is not recommended by UMBC nor does the book claim to be a part of that course, but the name indicated to me that it would be relevant). It doesn't go into enough detail of the "advanced" parts of the CC scope and spends a lot of time reviewing things that if you haven't already mastered you probably shouldn't be preparing for certification at this level.

Great book, just doesn't successfully meet its intentions.

This book was recently used as the primary text for my CCEMT-P course. While I believe this is a well written book, I feel it should be more appropriately used as a pre-course introduction to critical care in the pre-hospital and out-of-hospital setting, or as a tool to put nursing critical care textbooks into the EMS perspective. I feel this is a great book for any EMS provider to own and will gladly add it to my library instead of reselling it, I just feel that it poorly meets its intended purpose as a primary text for pre-hospital providers attending a critical care course.

An elementry crtical care book

This is a good book to peek into the world of critical care. It's also a good book to give you insight into your patient conditions based on medications etc. Not worth mucj for reviewing for FP-C or CCEMT-P.
