Eye-Opener

This is truly an eye-opening book that has forced me to deeply examine an issue of which I knew little about and/or ignored up until now. It's very well written and clearly identifies the issue, drives home the magnitude of it using easy to grasp and often entertaining statistics, and then presents actionable solutions. I was impressed with how it strikes a balance between emphasizing the enormity of the food waste problem and then presenting many simple ways that the individual consumer can help to combat this to great affect. It left me feeling empowered as opposed to overwhelmed.

This book is so important that I am ordering 22 copies for my friends.

Food Foolish is packed with astonishing information. I found each chapter gave me shocking facts - "1/3 or more of the food we produce each year is never eaten". It is also wonderfully entertaining - "An elephant weighs about 1 metric ton. Now imagine 1.3 billion healthy elephants happily standing on each other in one pile. That's what we're losing and wasting from the food supply chain each year.". It stopped me in my tracks - "The magnitude of food waste is shocking. Imagine purchasing three bags of groceries. While driving home, toss half of one bag of food onto the road. That represents the loss that occurs during harvest, processing and distribution. Arrive home and immediately toss the other half of the bag into the trash. That's the waste experienced by retailers and consumers. Buy three, get two: Welcome to our food system." This book should be read by everyone, right now, and all of us need to pay attention to it's message.

The book is an oldie, but the disease is still with us.

I read this book years ago, but never dreamed the day would come when I, too, would be diagnosed with breast cancer.

The experiences Betty went through are much the same as what most of us go through after we hear the diagnosis; however, over the years, treatments and medications have changed allowing us a great chance of survival. Like everything else in life, there are no guarantees.

I like the way Betty told her story, because she had a positive attitude about her illness, which is half the battle in itself. She never portrayed the "poor me" attitude and is an inspiration to others. However, it is an older book and I found some of the statements a little redundant in view of the changing times. For this reason, the book rated three stars. Overall, I still enjoyed the book.

A milestone book

When I was a teenager I remember reading Betty Rollin's book for the first time. It had an enormous impact on me because it was really the first time anyone had ever spoken about their experience with breast cancer. Little did I know that when I was 50 years old I would also develop breast cancer. I thought about this book and tried to find it but it was out of print. I was so glad to see it back with new information. The feelings she describes are still true today but what a difference the new treatments have made.

Prof. Chudacoff and Smith's book is concise in its discussion of events and personalities. In this sense it is an ideal _textbook_--but even though it is in its fifth edition it could use some editing! There are problems with textual flow and art, and in useful conclusions: saloons provided an outlet for "the musical expression of the black soul." Or how about the oft-mentioned but never defined or measured "rugged individualism" of Americans?

This dichotomy suffuses their lives with a potent mixture of superstition, politics, and surrealistic charm that gives the novel an otherworldly atmosphere. Garcia juggles these opposing life forces like a skilled magician accustomed to tossing into the air fiery objects that would explode if they came into contact. Writing experimentally in a variety of forms, she combines narratives, love letters, and monologs to portray the del Pinos as they move back and forth through time. A patchwork of incident, memory, letters, dreams and visions provides glimpses of a Cuban family at home and in exile in the '70's and '80's, but Garcia's debut suffers from its fragmented style. From disparate times, places, and (mostly female) points-of- view, Garcia reveals the circumstances and inner lives of various members of the del Pino family. Widowed matriarch Celia--who loved and lost a Spaniard, then married and went crazy--still lives near Havana, fulfilled at last by her active participation in Communist activities and quasi-erotic loyalty to El L�der, Fidel Castro. Daughter Felicia--who talks like a Garc�a Lorca poem--suffers episodes of violent insanity and amnesia, then seeks healing through the African-derived religion Santer�a. Meanwhile, Felicia's twin daughters repudiate her while her son Ivanito becomes a mama's boy. Celia's son Javier works in Czechoslovakia. Daughter Lourdes fled Cuba with her husband, opened the Yankee Doodle Bakery in Brooklyn, and thrives on American life, quickly embracing cold weather, capitalism, and prejudice. Her father, Jorge (Celia's husband), who died in New York following cancer treatment, continues to manifest himself to her. Lourdes's artistic daughter Pilar paints a scandalous punk Statue of Liberty and has psychic conversations with Celia. love cuba

i enjoyed this book. i just returned from a week in cuba since the restrictions have been lifted. i found the book especially interesting regarding the religious / spiritual insights. loved the story. told in fictionalized form, the characters ring true and the history of cuba becomes alive.

Excellent Resource for Beginners & Small Non-Profits

This is a great resource for people who do not have any background in bookkeeping or accounting. I did take two accounting classes in college about 10 years ago but they had pretty much nothing to do with bookkeeping or non-profits. What this book has that others don't is very specific instructions for going from source documents to making journal entries to posting to the General Ledger. Basic stuff that is incredibly confusing if you don't know how to do it-and ridiculously simple once you do.

Good introduction to NFP accounting concepts

I read this as a refresher of bookkeeping for a small non-profit organization. I picked up some good tips on reporting and budgeting. The details of accounting will have to be gleaned from another source, especially when there is an error in the records that isn't obvious. Overall, I found this book helpful.

Starting with little knowledge of bookkeeping, I learned from this book that much of what I thought I knew was wrong. It is a good book and has helped me a lot, but when I finished, I still had more questions than answers. In particular, I would have liked more information about how to begin and end an accounting period.

you either clarify that you're happy with your understanding and current decisions

It doesn't matter if you're a new Product Owner, or someone who's been doing the role for a long time. Occasionally you need some inspiration to aid you to think differently about a problem. These cards allow for this to out of the blue question to occur; simply pick a card at random, or flick through and choose one that jumps out at you.

By considering the question and it's meaning, you either clarify that you're happy with your understanding and current decisions, or find there are holes in your thinking.

I particularly like, 'if your product were a living, talking, entity, what would it say to you right now?' it may sound a little left-field, but thinking about a problem in a different domain can be so powerful.

Being a Product Owner is tough. It's hard to deal with the day-to-day but still understand and keep focused on the bigger picture. This deck of cards will help Product Owners do both. Some focus on the product at hand - "Who really wants this product or service that I am building" and some on the Product Owner themselves "Do the team invite you to their retrospectives?". I believe that reflecting on the questions in these cards will help any and every Product Owner to realise the potential of their role. Highly recommend.

I have recently acted as a product owner on a new project and having something to use in planning and review sessions that is a departure from the teams train of thought has helped stimulate some highly productive conversations that we would not otherwise have had.
