Not flawless, but a badly needed addition to most birding bookshelves

The Inner Bird is not a typical bird book, and therein lies a great deal of its value. It is the first recent popular science treatment of the anatomy of birds, and how that anatomy ties into the features more commonly written about aspects of avian biology; evolution, behaviour and taxonomy. Even experts of bird ecology or taxonomy will find something of value here, it brings back the almost Victorian emphasis on anatomy, on the skeleton, on how the shape drives the function (and visa versa). The treatment of evolution takes the recent revolution in our understanding of birds as dinosaurs from a skeletal point of view, and the recent breakthroughs in avian systematics and cladistics as derived from DNA and molecular analysis are explained for the layman and contrasted with previous attempts to assemble a tree of life for the class Aves.

The scholarship isn't always flawless, there are a few statements that will leave you scratching your head ("[bee-eaters] are one of only a few small non-passerine birds that undertake lengthy migrations"?). The price is also rather hefty, and the index could have been more helpful, but these are minor distractions in what is otherwise an excellent book that fills a gap in the market.

New thoughts on birds

Kaiser's book is called 'The Inner Bird' because he concentrates on the skeleton and internal features of this large and varied group of animals rather than the superficial plumage and behaviour which have been the subject of a great number of books in the past. It is an exceptional and possibly unique presentation of the highly specialized field of modern ornithology and the origin and development of the bird written in language readily accessible to the reader by an acknowledged expert. Kaiser describes the basic structure of birds, the most recent discoveries of feathered dinosaurs, early evolution and the way birds have adapted in their anatomy to different environments. The book is full of interesting insights and asides. Few people are aware for example that the bird was fully evolved long before the extinction of the dinosaurs or why penguins are so successful underwater (their anatomy allows them to generate pressure on the upstroke)or that the little swift may achieve speeds of more than 160 Km/hour. This book is not cheap but very good value for anyone who is interested in these extraordinary animals.

Evolution and Bird Design--for experts or enthusiasts

I can think of no other book that brings the evolution of avian insides (physiology and anatomy) to life like this one. Gill's or Petingill's textbooks (or even the newer Cornell textbook) are pretty dull in comparison. Although I work on birds for a living, I learned an awful lot about how avian physiology was shaped by the requirement of flight. At times, Kaiser digresses a little too much and probably speculates beyond where the science can take him. Also, the overemphasis on seabirds and murrelets at times distracts from the broader picture. Nonetheless, the book brought together the fossil record and modern anatomy/physiology in a way that made a lot of sense out of all the rapidly changing world of bird evolution (at a large scale). With all the fossils coming out of China and the rapidly changing higher order phylogeney (due to genomics and the Tree of Life) it is nice to see how the different pieces fit together. Excellent read.

A must read for all investors if you are not familiar with the content already

The book shows that certain kinds of stocks (small stocks, low p/e stocks, etc.) outperform decade after decade (60+ years!) without being much more risky. All investors should be familiar with these results. Your return would be 5-10 percentage points higher than average just by following some very simple rules. The first time I read this book it really shocked me. If it is so simple to get superior returns, why are almost all fund managers just getting average returns?

The book is full of statistics providing the details, but there is also useful information in the text. I would have preferred to move 2/3 of the statistics to an appendix because they do not add value. For some reason the author really likes to pile table after table to increase the page count. My guess is that the author thinks this gives the book more credibility. That is silly.

The author is not trained in statistics. However, the book is now in its fourth edition and he has responded to critique of previous editions. The author is familiar with standard deviation, Sharpe ratios, etc., so he is certainly not clueless. There are many ways this could have been a stronger book had the author known more about statistics. For instance when he is constructing composite indicators. There is for instance some data mining going on when he constructs the indicators.

A similar but much more academic approach is found in Expected Returns: An Investor's Guide to Harvesting Market Rewards (Wiley Finance). That is a better book and is much more detailed and sophisticated. To enjoy that book you should be able to read academic finance literature. If you are able to do so, that book is much better than the current book. Still, the current book is pretty good.

There are other weaknesses in the book. The author does not try to understand why the market behaves as it does. He claims that private investors cannot buy stock below 200M in market capitalisation. All together these are really minor quibbles that should not influence your decision to buy the book.

The book is good, but after four editions I would have expected a bit more of the book. The core message is actually the same in all books. The additional years of data and more sophisticated statistics actually does not change any of the main conclusion. Still, I would recommend that you get the latest edition.

Dated Book Offers Look Back at Popular Investment Strategy

While this book was revolutionary in the 1990s, it was obsolete when first published because it got exploited by investors everywhere as soon as it was known. What Works on Wall Street is in its 4th edition but has not even been updated since the 3rd edition. It did work as far as finding a strategy that's effective when back-tested but it is hopelessly outdated now. Jim has not had a hugely successful track record running money overall. O'Shaughnessy has worked in the US and Canada with mixed results. After the tech wreck the mutual funds Jim managed were shut down (Cornerstone Growth and Cornerstone Value) and the returns were fairly disappointing. In 1999, O'Shaughnessy started Netfolio, The Personal Fund Company, to offer individual investors the ability to build their own diversified portfolio over the internet. The company was closed in 2001. Jim had some decent returns in Canada until the 2008 downturn (when his fund experienced a 50% haircut!) but his ideas suffer from style bias since growth investments simply get slaughtered when the market is falling, flat or range-bound (as it appears to be now). Ultimately, returns from growth investing have shown to be inferior to value investing when risk is factored into the equation. The O'Shaughnessy US Growth Fund has returned 1.76% annualized over the last 10 years (as of Jan 2014) and has underperformed its peers in Small & Mid-Cap Equity and even treasury bills (visit Morningstar for more info). Needless to say, the ideas presented in this book don't have much practical value if you want to make money in the stock market and are even less applicable since 2008 but they do work as a history lesson. There is an overwhelming amount of data in this book so most of it is fairly dry reading.

Check out The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham or Triumph of the Optimists instead. Admittedly, What Works on Wall Street has managed to stay in print.

Review for 2011, fourth edition

I am a big fan of James O'Shaughnessy and I use a number of the strategies he outlined previously with good results.

I have returned my copy of the 4th edition. The previous editions had updated data for each strategy discussed, plus new strategies that were examined. Unfortunately, this edition does not. While I am interested in hearing his new findings, I expected, wanted and needed data updates for all the strategies previously reviewed, particularly those I use or am considering using. I was totally surprised and disappointed by this change.

I highly recommend his 3rd edition of this book.

In these pages, I argue that the spatial and behavioral discourses in the novels of contemporary customs offer a telling history of the evolving formulation of the Spanish bourgeoisie. The linking of novels and urbanism is hardly arbitrary in the context of nineteenth-century Spain. Urbanism, particularly in the nineteenth century, was as much a verbal construction as the novel, as proven by the lengthy treatises of such prominent Spanish bureaucrats, engineers, architects, and urban planners as Ram�n de Mesonero Romanos, Ildefons Cerd� and Carlos Mar�a de Castro. For Spanish intellectuals of this era, city planning and the novel functioned as parallel, enmeshed discourses in which to work out what it meant to be middle class and the roles this class ought to play in contemporary society. In this way, they can be considered associated fields of discourse, in the sense described by Michel Foucault in The Archaeology of Knowledge. Foucault's treatise was a call for scholars to reexamine historical fields and question the historical grouping of knowledge(s) into certain discursive unities, and consider whether these might be broken up and new ones conceived.In this vein, this book undertakes a broader and more integrative view of the Spanish nineteenth century, calling into question the boundaries of fields such as etiquette and urban planning, or literature and touristic discourse.

MTB 2nd edition + New Basic Science additions = 3rd edition

Just received the book and read the ID chapter.

So, the only difference, I can see, between this 3rd edition and the 2nd edition is the addition of Basic Science information, which is displayed in purple boxes under the topics where it is relevant. From scanning through the rest of the chapters, it seems like ID has the most amount of new basic science information, with other chapters having their fair share of new tid-bits added as well.

Now, how helpful and useful the basic science information is, I won't know until the questions are started, but for the most part, the information looks as high yield as possible without going overboard reviewing ALL your step 1 stuff.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the "new" Step 3 exam is only adding about of 3-5% of basic sciences, so I don't think it can really make or break your score, and since for most of us, a passing score is enough, I think the 2nd edition of this book plus a qbank would suffice as well.

Other than that, all the other information seems unchanged.

I will update this periodically as I keep using it in conjunction with a Qbank and see how useful the updated information is.

Surprised there is no basic science added to the Emergency Medicine/Toxicology section. I started a qbank today and from the questions I got from EM/Tox, I figured there should be information on the MOA of some of the toxicities, like for example in Acetaminophen toxicity, glutathione is needed to inactivate the toxic metabolite NAPQI, or how n-acetyl-cysteine acts as a glutathione substrate to help inactivate NAPQI... and same can be said about any of the other toxicities listed in the section which I thought were pretty commonly seen and tested. Maybe their not as important for the exam??? Not sure but thought i'd point it out.

Good book, minor update

If you have MTB 2nd edition, you don't need to buy this book. At first glance, the "new" content for the exam change is minimal. The only other change is the 9 pages worth of corrections from the previous edition. Also, the authors didn't even bother to update the examination structure in the introduction. According to the FSMB website, the examination structure has been changed and can be viewed here https://www.fsmb.org/Media/Default/PDF/USMLE/USMLEStep3_2014_BOI.pdf. While it may seem to be only a minor oversight, for a book that harps on being "the first to address the new exam," it failed miserably at its basic core. Even with the occasional basic science correlate in every section, I don't feel that this is enough to make me ready for the new exam questions. From what I understand and have seen in qbanks, the majority of the new material on the exam is mostly related to epidemiology and biostatics, neither of which I have seen touched upon yet in this book.

That being said, the book itself is and always has been a great asset for step 3 and I highly recommend it. I appreciate Dr. Fischer and his team for providing us with this invaluable targeted review. It may seem overly critical to dock 2 stars based upon my own higher expectations, but the way the new book and videos were marketed I couldn't not have them.

Unfortunately one of the few resources.

This is to shallow for the exam, now we find lots of new info the exam such as prevention, risk factors and outcome predictors, which this book doesn't cover. Step 2 CK and Step 3 are based on algorithms, at least for internal medicine which has no algorithms. The new basic sciences are comments that you must have known to get this far and take this exam. The new Patient Safety and Quality Improvement facts are as well too basic and shallow, there are no mention to root cause analysis, adverse events, sentinel events which are man themes in PSQI.

Amazingly there's no epidemiology or statistics section which is a big deal for this exam. We need better sources to take the restructured exams and unfortunately this book is one of the few resources we have, maybe was worth it years ago when exams were "easier" but no doesn't meet the expectations I had.

I don't want to sound disrespectful but the Internal Medicine section needs an urgent thorough review by board certified people, some parts seems to be written by mediocre med school students, with lay language and non-standard cut-offs values for decision making. We cannot just say "severe cases must be treated with this..." when no definition of severe cases are in the book, the questions will challenge you to decide whether this is severe enough or not, that's why I preferred to use this as a notebook to write on top of every disease what will help me to answer questions. I hope you find this comments useful and made you choose wisely about other resources and don't expect this book to be the panacea.

Combining moments of danger with moments of profound introspection, mountaineer/explorer Ridgeway details his journey from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro through the Tsavo game reserves to Mombasa, a month-long journey on foot, which allows him to experience man's primal relationships with the environment. Traveling with an experienced guide, two members of the Kenya Park and Wildlife Service, and two sharpshooters (in case of life-threatening danger), Ridgeway follows dry riverbeds across the savanna, seeking "tactile knowledge of Africa's wildlands and wild animals."

Far more than a search for thrills, the journey offers Ridgeway an opportunity to observe breath-taking vistas and the full panoply of wildlife, from the elephant to the tiniest of birds, paying equal attention to all. Mourning the absence of once-plentiful animals from the bushlands near Kilimanjaro, and the decline of species elsewhere, Ridgeway contemplates the long-term effects of colonialism, big game hunting, poaching, traditional tribal values, climatic changes, and tourism, as well as man's seemingly innate tendency to kill certain species into extinction.

Ridgeway, long a hunter himself, is an engaging author, both observant and thoughtful. A great admirer of hunter-turned-game-park-adminstrator Bill Woodley, whose two sons from the Park and Wildlife Service are on the journey, he is aware that conservation is a crucial issue. Extolling the work of elephant researchers Cynthia Moss and Joyce Poole, the latter of whom joins the group for part of the journey, he points out that they have acquired through study a kind of knowledge not available to hunters. As he lauds the efforts of Richard Leakey and others to save both animals and their habitats, Ridgeway's sensitive and impartial treatment of conservation issues allow him to convey the "big picture" effectively and to conclude: "The central hope for Africa's large mammals...is to fight fiercely not only to preserve, but even to expand, their wild habitats. Whatever happens to the beasts, happens to man." Mary Whipple

On foot across the African plain

The story is of a trek, entirely on foot, from the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, east along the great watercourses that rise on the mountain and empty into the Indian Ocean. Most of the trek is through the Tsavo game parks in southeastern Kenya.
Despite some sloppy editing, the book succeeds very well on two fronts. First in giving the reader a very palpable sense of being on foot and in danger in the equatorial African wilds, where humans are prey as often as predator. The other, unexpected area of success of this book is as an introduction to the personalities (Richard Leakey, for instance) and issues involved in East African conservationism., as well as a sympathetic description of the plight of the indigenous peoples living on the periphery of the game parks whose cultures were utterly destroyed by a well-intentioned attempt to save the wildlife.
Big topics, all, and all are well presented.
The author wrestles with the conflicts that arise from the fact of human population growth and the inchoate desire to preserve. He comes back over and over to the ironic story of the game warden who hires as hunting guides the poachers he himself captured. he hints that humanity may, haltingly, be developing a more sophisticated approach to these problems, at least intellectually among a few ... but still the Somalis poach elephant with automatic weapons, and still the Indonesian forests burn.
The question remains: will a satisfactory balance be struck as a result of the extremes engaged in liberal democratic debate, of the Greens rioting at WTO conferences and clear-cutters flattening the Amazon rain forest?
However, the book is primarily about an adventure walk through Africa; it is an easy read and the material is both gripping and topical (1997).
